Regional Manager, Bioinformatics, US Operations - the role:

As a regional manager of the Bioinformatics Operations Team, you will join and lead a diverse, talented, and collaborative team of bioinformatics engineers. This role is both challenging and rewarding.  You will represent the East regional operations arm of Bioinformatics at Quest Diagnostics. You will have the most direct impact on patient care by ensuring the quality of products and care delivered to our patients on a daily basis within prescribed turnaround times. You will work in an agile environment, have an eye for innovation and lead this team in validating, supporting, and extending fully automated healthcare-grade analysis pipelines and applications that meet the needs of our customers, both internally and externally. This role partners closely with product owners, bioinformatics research and engineering teams, laboratory and medical scientists, enterprise IT teams, and others both inside and outside the organization, ensuring availability of the production systems from sample-to-result. Through these relationships, you will help define and implement the vision, strategy, and roadmap for quality products across the region both on premises and in the cloud. This professional will work in a hybrid environment – minimum of 2-3 days on site per week – and reports to the Bioinformatics Director of US Operations.

Responsibilities

GENERAL

  • Ensure availability of applications in production and support sample/test-order processing, adhering to appropriate regulatory and security frameworks/policies.
  • Develop and improve our efforts in bioinformatics software and platforms that will help Quest to become the global leader in clinical bioinformatics and maximize growth.
  • Support our culture of continuous improvement with a will to win. Employ agile methodology principles to drive continuous improvement activities and lead initiatives as required.

 

PEOPLE

  • Manage a distributed (remote and hybrid) team of bioinformatics engineers to support one or more physical sites and time zones.
  • Engage with critical business partners and teams in the timely support of new and ongoing product offerings.
  • Engage and synchronize efforts with other regional managers across the US and the EU.
  • Implement a framework for competency training and assessment across the support staff.
  • Creatively organize, build, and schedule a team of employees to provide full operational coverage across the region.
  • Evaluate the talent level of employees and drive actions to develop employee talent and address performance issues.

 

PROCESSES

  • Lead and manage the validation, quality control, documentation, automation, and support of cross-functional bioinformatics projects, including incident management of associated products.
  • Efficiently balance the lifecycle management of various pipelines/workflows, applications, and products with daily operational support needs, aiming to meet and beat operational SLAs and turnaround times.
  • Work with engineering teams to maximize the quality and safety of our product offerings by expanding our existing CI/CD pipelines and layering them with data-driven process controls for daily product integrity checks.
  • Continuously work with other cross-functional teams to develop, employ and improve best practices in software development, software deployment, process documentation with application and workflow version controls, and automated testing that satisfies, at minimum, requirements from accreditation/regulatory bodies such as CAP, CLIA, ISO and the FDA.

 

TOOLS

    • Manage the responsibilities of various databases, pipelines, interfaces, dashboards, and LIMS associated with Bioinformatics Operations on premises and in the cloud.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience or related.
  • A solid background in bioinformatics engineering, software development, technologies, standards, etc.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, project management skills, strong written and verbal skills, and organizational skills. Proven ability to drive process with indirect authority to project team members.
  • Strong understanding of software best practices and agile methodology to serve as role model for the team and maintain a high level of quality and scalability on the technical as well as scientific side.
  • Experience with building highly automated and optimized bioinformatics solutions applicable to AWS cloud and on-prem computing environments.
  • Proven success in change leadership and creating engaged and inspired teams.
  • Influences and communicates effectively with non-technical audiences including senior business executives and managers.
  • A sharp thinker who quickly grasps the technical implications of business processes, and able to provide valuable insight into the perspectives of users, managers, developers, and other stakeholders.
  • Comfortably moves between highly varying levels of abstraction from business strategy to IT strategy to high-level technical design.
  • Team player mindset and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Goal-oriented, self-motivated, and driven to make a positive impact in healthcare.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with bioinformatics best practices, genomics, healthcare
  • Experience with sensitive patient data and working under HIPAA regulations
  • Experience working with multi-cultural, international teams
  • MSc/PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related
